Abstract Apatite is a powerful research tool because it common in various rocks and incorporates many chemical elements. Understanding how elements partition between apatite melt the controls on are critical for applications of apatite. It has been recently proposed that MgO content magmatic proportional to melt, highlighting potential importance this oxide as parameter. A comprehensive compilation experimental data study shows relationship defines two distinct equilibrium trends, indicating composition or, more specifically, polymerization strongly MgO. These findings have great implications using magma petrogenesis sediment provenance. We show when plotted against host-rock MgO, volcanic plutonic systems different behaviors. The plot around apatite-melt while apatites most lower than expected if they were with host bulk rock. For granites high saturation temperatures, indicates crystallized from low-MgO parent melts but later became part cumulate higher parental possibly due extraction evolved interstitial melt. contrast therefore can provide new perspective debate about volcanic-plutonic connection.
